TAKING ACTION WITH MY HOME OFFICE
Reinventing a room into a home office takes two types of actions:
1. painting, carpeting, changing light fixtures… in other words all those aethetic changes you need to be productive.
2. Getting down and dirty in the muck and really creating a home office that works for you.
This section type of action steps may not sound so fun, but the rewards are worth it, so how do you begin?
First, SORT: I am emptying out the room and sorting everything; papers, containers, electronics, supplies and I am putting them in banker boxes labeling what each box contains. The more you sort, the easier it is to contain later. Beware, sorting takes the most time and the room will look worse.
Next: TOSS: Go through each box and toss what you don’t need. I am pretty good about tossing, but if you aren’t that’s ok. However, if you are keeping something because you may need it later, GET RID OF IT! If you will really need it in the future, it will be made available to you.
Now ASSIGN A HOME: Take out a piece of paper and think about where you want all the remaining items and write it down. What kind of containers do you need to keep your things organized? Where will they go?
For example: I know that my paper will be going into file cabinets labeled according to type of papers the files drawers will house. I also have many binders, indexes, and page protectors not to mention my freedom filer supplies. They are going to need a supply cabinet so they are contained and out of sight. Finally my action system will be set up near my desk so I can take action from my seat!
Next week we will wrap up this home office makeover with containing and setting up systems to keep my office clutter free and ready for productivity!
