Over The Top Self-Care: 4 Magic Phrases to Say to You That Obnoxious Voice in your Noggin.
After Thanksgiving, I wrote a post about Thanksgiving and dealing with the fam. To refresh your memory I have included the link right here.
I had some fun with those phrases! It started to become a big joke and as a result; our Holiday was fun and light.
However, what about that mean girl that talks to you inside your mind? What do you say to her?
Do you agree with her?
Do you fight with her?
Do you quiet her with some food?
Yes, it is all connected.
Let’s try something different.
First, quit viewing that mean girl as a bitch. She isn’t: she is there to try and keep you safe. She needs you to listen because she does have something to say.
So, how about using one of these phrases and listen to her response.
An Example:
Over the course of the year I have gained 8 pounds. Some of my clothes don’t fit and as a formerly 200 pound women; I am scared that the weight could return and not only would I be disappointing myself but also my clients and potential clients. That mean girl said:
“You suck! If you can’t keep the weight off yourself then how can you help others?”
Usually I would ignore, fight or eat over it. This time I used one of the magic phrases:
“That’s Interesting, Why Do You Say That?”
Little Maureen replied that she was afraid that I would go back to my ways and since that way almost killed us; that she was afraid that we die. She wants us to be safe and maybe if I stopped working to help others we could stay thin and safe.
Wow: doesn’t that switch the whole encounter a 180 degrees?
I replied “These 8 pounds are not bad; they have a message to deliver and when we let go of the panic; we will be able to hear it.”
“Plus, these 8 pounds will help us be an even more effective coach!”
Little Maureen replied: “Ok that makes sense!”
Does she still come back ?
Yes, but all she wants is some reassurance.
So, I give her some love.
Disaster averted!
